.
Throughout the years, Tacoma-Pierce County has been fortunate to receive acclaim and publicity thanks to the national and international caliber of athletes and teams representing our area. Under the initial inspiration of the Tacoma Athletic Commission, which was founded in 1943 to celebrate amateur athletics and civic betterment, and generous contributions from benefactors, the museum became a reality when it opened in the Tacoma Dome in October 1994. Changes at the Tacoma Dome caused the museum to become a virtual experience, but our hope is that we will return to a physical presence for greater interaction with all we have to exhibit and the stories we have to share.
